JIU is the pioneer in online learning. In 1987 JIU founder, Glenn R. Jones launched the cable television network Mind Extension University (ME/U), which enabled 30,000 students to take courses from more than 30 colleges and universities via television. In the nascence of the Internet, Jones started JIU in 1993 – the first university anywhere to exist completely online.
In 1999, JIU became the first fully online university in the U.S. to be accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, and a member of the North Central Association.[1] This decision caused outrage from the American Association of University Professors on the grounds that the teaching staff had no academic freedom, and that an institution that taught only one subject could not claim to be a university.[2] Since then, Jones International University has continued to develop and expand degree program offerings to include 47 unique degree programs in business and education. JIU offers degrees at the associate, bachelor, master and doctorate levels. The university offers certificate programs in the school of business, as well as in the school of education.
JIU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association, one of six regional accrediting bodies in the United States.
The average age of a Jones International University student is between 35 (undergraduate) and 39 (graduate). JIU’s student body spans 31 different countries, all 50 states, and Guam, Puerto Rico, and Washington D.C. Over half of JIU students are currently pursuing their masters or doctorate degree, while the remaining students are working on associate, bachelor or certificate degree programs.
Jones International University faculty consists of over 150 professors. All have either masters or doctorate degrees. 79% of the faculty possesses terminal degrees in their field. 76% of the faculty has 3 or more years of teaching in an adult learning setting or online. 39% of the faculty have both taught adult learners for over 10 years and have taught online for over 3 years. The average length of employment for a professor at the university is over 3 years. Applicants interested in joining the faculty are held to a high qualifications standard that addresses the candidate’s degree, teaching experience, professional experience, and scholarly contributions within their field of study and practice. Professors are assessed by their students, their peers, themselves, and the administration.
The University’s faculty is a diverse population. 7% of the faculty is African-American, 5% is Asian, 3% is Hispanic or Latino, and 1% is American Indian or Alaskan Native. 4% of the faculty is classified as two or more ethnicities. The faculty is divided evenly between male and female professors (50% each). The faculty all teach online and make their residences in several states and countries around the globe.
Commitment to faculty scholarship is evidenced by the over 3000 publications and presentations attributed to the professors currently teaching. Over 550 of these scholarship contributions have been published and, or presented within the last three years. JIU boasts a faculty that is both committed to student learning and scholarly study within their field.[3]
